A Skull for all Seasons – Alexander McQueen’s Jewellery

If there’s one iconic image from Alexander McQueen’s designs that is sure to endure with fashion fans for years to come it’s his unmistakable skull imagery. Seen splattered across scarves and, most notably, McQueen’s jewellery, the skull image can go with a range of styles: from preppy and sweet to grungy and punk, this is a skull that knows no boundaries!

When it comes to jewellery, the skull is most often seen out and about fused to the top of a ring. The skull has seen a number of redesigns that have translated onto the rings, with the “punk” skull coming studded with gemstones across its teeth and in its eye sockets. The dagger skull features a winged sword impaled through the top of the skull with a shimmering chain gathered around its base: the eye sockets, once again, come with gemstones set in. The mini skull and cherry blossom style makes for quite an eye catching ring – built up with butterfly and cherry blossom detailing, the skull rests upon the top of a fabulous mound of imitation tree leaves that makes it hard to miss.

If you want something a little more rock and roll, the twin skull rings are hard to beat. This ring comes in a number of styles, ranging from just two heads faced in opposite direction, to a stunning spiral, snake-like design. Available in brushed metal or gold-tone brass, the twin skull ring is one of the most sought after of the Alexander McQueen rings.

    Bridgetown, Quaint Capital of Barbados

For many years, the capital of Barbados flew the Union Jack until it gained independence in 1966. Influences of Britain remain, however, in Bridgetown where landmarks, cuisine and architecture have retained hints of the Empire. The town is located in the southwest of Barbados, which is a relatively small island in the Lesser Antilles (166 square miles in size).

In former times, Bridgetown was a hub of activity for island trading vessels, which would have docked at the deep water harbour. There is also a small canal that runs in the centre of the city called Constitution River, or informally “Careenage”, which is just large enough for fishing vessels and pleasure craft that can run up under two bridges and gain a unique perspective of this quaint colonial city.

Two prime shopping locations are Broad Street, which is the main street in the city and dotted with department stores, duty-free shops and banks, and the Bayshore Complex, which is a mall outside the city limits. Some popular sites of interest include the Barbados Parliament buildings that date back to 1639. Another historic site is the National Heroes Square (formerly Trafalgar Square), which contains a statue of Admiral Lord Nelson, erected to commemorate the British navy’s victory during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Browse holidays to Barbados and explore the cities that make up this unique and popular island nation.

    History and Museums on Menorca

What attracts visitors to Menorca is its pristine beaches and breath taking landscapes; however, there’s much more to investigate on this Balearic Island paradise. Located off the coast of Spain and popular for beach holidays, Menorca is also a place of historical monuments, museums and architecture.

The Museum of Menorca is dedicated to archaeological history, hosting collections of coins, pottery, paintings and engravings dating back to ancient history. Housed in a baroque 17th Century building, this museum was once a Franciscan monastery and the atmosphere is well-applied to the items it exhibits.
The S’Hostal quarries are near the town of Cuitadella on the western end of Menorca. Visitors are invited to observe these magnificent sandstone quarries that were operational up until the close of the previous Century, and are said to be over 200 years old. Local authorities have been hard at work in preserving and restoring this magnificent site, where a botanic garden dedicated to growing autochthonous plants can also be seen.
Visitors may enjoy the port of Mao, which has the distinction of being the second deepest natural water harbour in the world, located just on the outskirts of Mao’s city centre. Stop in at numerous boutiques, galleries, bars and restaurants and spend some time at the shoreline of this picturesque port.

Enjoy Holidays to Menorca, which may begin by the seaside, but become much more; from historic museums and gothic cathedrals to sandstone quarries and hidden caves; there is an abundance of things to do on this island paradise.

    Flights to Tenerife, Carnival Island

Tenerife is the largest of seven Canary Islands on the coast of Spain. While it’s a tourist hotspot on account of its beautiful beaches and warm weather, it also attracts festival goers interested in attending the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is held in the capital city of the island in February every year.

The festival is considered to be the second-most popular in the world after the Rio Carnival, and as a result, the two cities are twinned. The carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife begins with an opening parade through the streets, with thousands of people dressed in fancy dress, launching festivities that continue for several days until the “entierro de la sardina” or burial of the sardine, which officially marks the end. Unofficially, however, the carnival continues until Piñata weekend, when the Don Carnal puts an end to the carnival.

The official side of the Carnival has more than one hundred groups including murgas (Uruguayan and Argentinian musical theatre), comparsas (Latin American conga) and rondallas or ensembles of string instruments played with plectrums. The unofficial or street carnival sees scores of people celebrating on the street wearing fancy dress. The carnival is also themed each year, with themes in recent years including horror films, magic, Hollywood musicals and pirates.

Browse flights to Tenerife to enjoy this island and take part in a world-renowned carnival.

    A Jamaican Ghost Story

The White Which of Rose Hall is a legend told on the beautiful Caribbean island of Jamaica. Set in the early 19th Century, it tells the tale of Annie Palmer nee Patterson, who was said to be sinisterly beautiful but who later murdered a succession of men, including her husband. The truth is probably less sensational, however, as the tale is said to be inspired by a novel of the same name.

Visitors can yet view Rose Hall, the stately but crumbling mansion built in the late 18th Century during the sugar boom, which was the home of John and Annie Palmer. Annie was born on neighbouring Haiti but moved to Jamaica when she married John Palmer who owned one of the island’s most stately homes, east of Montego Bay. She was said to be of very small stature; under five feet.

In the 1970s, Rose Hall was purchased and converted into a museum that showcases the island’s slave history with a conceptualised tour of antiques and original fittings, where visitors can get a glimpse of Jamaica’s slavery and uprisings in the 1830s.

Book Jamaica holidays to tour this beautiful island that offers a rich mix of legend, history and intrigue.

Preparing for a Year Long Backpacking Trip

Packing to go for a weeklong holiday is a big challenge for a lot of people – picking outfits for specific nights is a quandary and the even more troubling swimsuit choice snags many more would be holidaymakers. If you are heading off for a trip 52 times that long, a year as it were, then you have a much bigger challenge ahead of you. Here are a few tips to help you pack for your long, long haul.

    Pack Light

Above all you need to make sure you pack lightly, you may well find yourself dragging this bag along miles of highway, or through tangled jungles so you don’t want it to weigh a ton. This means making some very tough decisions and leaving a lot of stuff behind. Don’t be discouraged – you can cut out all that extra stuff to leave your backpack sleek and easily transportable.

    Pack Tough

If you are away for a long time with a small amount of clothes you will need to bring only the hardiest of fabrics: these outfits will be worn many times and be subject to washing in dozens of different machines. This will absolutely wear out anything but the most sturdy clothes.

    Pack Interchangable

It also important to bring clothes that can be worn in lots of different combinations – there’s no point bringing a t-shirt that looks silly in most situations. So bring a variety of stuff that looks good together and you will always be able to look halfway decent.

    Exploring France Outside of Paris

Most tourists have been to France, but when it really gets down to the heart of it they’ve only actually been to Paris. This makes sense as the City of Lights is a truly amazing place to visit and everyone has to go there at least once in their lifetime. Yet there is so much more to France – here are three great places to visit.

    Normandy

Normandy does not have the weather you would associate with other parts of France yet it’s a fun place to visit. Rolling countryside dotted with quant villages waits to be explored by car or foot. There also some amazing historic sites like the astounding castle of Mont St. Michel and the D-day Beaches.

    Toulouse

Toulouse is a beautiful city in the south of France – it has a buzzing cultural scene and a lovely city centre humming with bars, cafes and nightclubs. It is also well placed to explore the surrounding countryside, especially the Pyrenees where you can find some of the most pleasant, yet deserted, hikes in the world.

    The Alps

France is also home to some of the best and most developed ski resorts, so if you visit in the winter you should get ready for some downhill fun. Resorts like Val d’Isere and Deux Alpes are great spots to have fun with a group of friends or your family.

France is one of the most amazing countries in the world, so don’t get stuck in its capital city – there’s a lot more to France than the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre.
