Spain’s second largest city – Barcelona – lies on the eastern coast of the country and the capital of Catalonia boasts a distinctive regional culture. Particularly renowned for the architecture of Antoni Gaudi, his works are visible around the city. Nature, religion, architecture and a love for Catalonia all proved to be strong influencers on Gaudi and you can identify these features as you explore.

The Sagrada Familia has long held appeal to those looking to capture a sense of the Gaudi style. This Roman Catholic church is now a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms were used and Gaudi dedicated the final years of his life to the project although sadly was never able to complete it. It is hoped that eventually by the year 2026 – which will mark the centennial of Gaudi’s death – that the project will finally come to fruition.

To witness this remarkable structure is a very personal experience, even for those who are not interested in the religious aspects of the church. All will notice different elements and the eye will be drawn to varied highlights from the story of Jesus’ life to the Rose Tree Door – which is small but decorated profusely.

Take some time out of the city to stroll through Park Guell, a space just brimming with Gaudi’s creations. A massive coloured lizard is a real icon – a reference to the legend of St George and dragon – with a beautiful mosaic pattern, while his standard Greek cross towers above the left gatehouse at the entrance to the park.

Keep your eyes peeled for touches of Gaudi on a trip to the city and book your flights to Barcelona.

Spain’s second largest city – Barcelona – lies on the eastern coast of the country and the capital of Catalonia boasts a distinctive regional culture. Particularly renowned for the architecture of Antoni Gaudi, his works are visible around the city.
